  • I do not have any experience with WP8 but for Android and iOS you can use

    Also streams are possible.

  • If you want to open a file for writing values I would recommend StreamWriter. Works on all platforms, just the path will be different (especially on WP8).

  • You can use System.IO for Android and iOS, but neither that or StreamWriter will work on Windows Phone 8. On Windows Phone 8, the only file I/O that is allowed is Isolated Storage. If you wanted to make a common library for all 3 platforms, you would have to use the lowest common denominator. In this case, it would be WP8 using Isolated Storage. Isolated Storage also works on Xamarin.iOS and Xamarin.Android.

    @rmacias‌, when you say is not allowed what exactly does that mean? Both StreamWriter and StreamReader work on WP8 so you CAN use them. The below code has no trouble running on actual device.

  • Interesting, though it doesn't explicitly state it works on WP8, StreamWriter is PCL compliant.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/System.IO.StreamWriter(v=vs.110).aspx

    I've always used IsolatedStorage, so that's good to know. I stand corrected!

  • It works, I just don't know if its use will cause any red flags when publishing.

  • Heh, now I have something to play with over the weekend.

  • Useful tool to look into the WP8 app folder: https://wptools.codeplex.com/

  • @SKall‌
    var path = Path.Combine(ApplicationData.Current.LocalFolder.Path, 'Shared', 'Media');
    var newfile = Path.Combine(path, 'newfile.txt');

    working fine in Windows Phone and Android, but when place this code in portable class library StreamWriter expects steam instead of file path.

    How do we resolve this issue.

    You are right, PCL doesn't support StreamWriter from string. I do think File.OpenWrite(...) works though. Here is a quick draft for using an injectable service or delegate:

Writing a story that will inspire people starts with two things: a book outline and the best writing software. To make writing your next story fun, entertaining, and interesting, you should look beyond Microsoft Office Word by choosing the best book writing software for your project. Nevertheless, with many writing tools out there, it may be hard to decide what software is best. Download Voice Writer Voice Text app. This app lets users send text messages by their voice. It features a utility to read aloud the contents of text messages. You’ll find this feature useful when you’re driving a vehicle. Voice text app for Android allows users to set customized voice commands. You can use it to make quick phone calls.

Examples

The TextWriter class is an abstract class. Therefore, you do not instantiate it in your code. The StreamWriter class derives from TextWriter and provides implementations of the members for writing to a stream. The following example shows how to write two lines that consist of string values to a text file by using the WriteLineAsync(String) method.

Override Dispose in a derived class to provide

Remarks

TextWriter is the abstract base class of StreamWriter and StringWriter, which write characters to streams and strings, respectively. Create an instance of TextWriter to write an object to a string, write strings to a file, or to serialize XML. You can also use an instance of TextWriter to write text to a custom backing store using the same APIs you would use for a string or a stream, or to add support for text formatting.

Text

All the Write methods of TextWriter having primitive data types as parameters write out the values as strings.

By default, a TextWriter is not thread safe. See TextWriter.Synchronized for a thread-safe wrapper.

Important

This type implements the IDisposable interface. When you have finished using any type that derives from this type, you should dispose of it either directly or indirectly. To dispose of the type directly, call its Dispose method in a try/catch block. To dispose of it indirectly, use a language construct such as using (in C#) or Using (in Visual Basic). For more information, see Dispose and the 'Using an Object that Implements IDisposable' section in the IDisposable interface topic.

For a list of common I/O tasks, see Common I/O Tasks.

Notes to Implementers

A derived class must minimally implement the Write(Char) method to make a useful instance of TextWriter.

Constructors

TextWriter()

Initializes a new instance of the TextWriter class.

TextWriter(IFormatProvider)

Initializes a new instance of the TextWriter class with the specified format provider.

Fields

CoreNewLine

Stores the newline characters used for this TextWriter.

Null

Provides a TextWriter with no backing store that can be written to, but not read from.

Properties

Writer Download Free

Encoding

FlushAsync()

Asynchronously clears all buffers for the current writer and causes any buffered data to be written to the underlying device.

GetHashCode()

Serves as the default hash function.

(Inherited from Object)
GetLifetimeService()

Retrieves the current lifetime service object that controls the lifetime policy for this instance.

(Inherited from MarshalByRefObject)
GetType()
